Rigmuir 33kV Wind Farm
Labron Technical Ltd were engaged at an early stage of the Rigmuir Wind Farm project by CleanEarth Energy to deliver Independent Connection Provider (ICP) services. This involved the design, installation, and commissioning of the electrical infrastructure required to connect the site to the national grid.
The project, located near East Kilbride, comprises three wind turbines with a combined generation capacity of 13.5 megawatts (MW). Labron Technical’s early involvement ensured that the grid connection works were fully integrated into the broader project timeline, supporting a streamlined and efficient delivery of this renewable energy development.
An initial feasibility and front-end engineering study identified several grid connection options, taking into account the site’s former use as a landfill and the associated land constraints.
The options which were evaluated included a direct local grid tie-in and an extended cable route to nearby substations.
Following technical and commercial assessment, Labron Technical Ltd delivered a detailed grid connection proposal in line with DNO (Distribution Network Operator) requirements.
Key project stages included coordination with SP Energy Networks (SPEN), securing necessary wayleaves, and addressing stakeholder concerns, particularly regarding access and environmental considerations due to the site’s previous use as a waste site.
Labron Technical Ltd managed the complete electrical installation and commissioning process, including supply and oversight of 33kV switchgear, transformers, protection systems, and on-site SCADA integration to comply with local grid constraints.
The electrical infrastructure features a 33kV underground cable connection integrated with a new substation built on site, which includes all necessary HV equipment, protection systems, and ancillary gear.
We’re proud to confirm that Rigmuir Wind Farm is now fully operational, delivering approximately 45GWh annually to the UK grid and supporting a corporate PPA with a major European manufacturing company.
